NYC // SummerStage Tribute for Salsa Legend Héctor Lavoe | Jun. 26

Willie Colon and Héctor Lavoe

Willie Colon and Héctor Lavoe

For those of you whose parents still blast Héctor Lavoe ‘s Mi Gente on Saturday morning, New York City’s SummerStage has a special treat for you tonight!

The late Puerto Rican singer who rose to international fame with the Fania All-Stars in the 1970s will receive a tribute fit for a salsa king.

With Johnny Pacheco and Fania, Lavoe performed alongside Ismael Miranda, Cheo Feliciano, Justo Betancourt, Ismael Quintana, Bobby Cruz, Pete “El Conde” Rodriguez, Santos Colón, and Celia Cruz at a number of notable live performances such as Muhammad Ali and George Foreman ‘s 1974 boxing match Rumble in the Jungle in Zaire, Africa and Yankee Stadium in 1975.

His hits include a version of Tite Curet Alonso ‘s Periódico de Ayer ,” a salsa recording of Nicolás Guillén ‘s poem Sóngoro Cosongo ,” and El Rey de la Puntualidad ,” all produced by Willie Colón .

Lavoe’s musical legacy continues to influence Caribbean music and culture, and his life inspired the 2006 biographical film, El Cantante , produced by and starring reigning king of salsa Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez .

Watch the Zaire performance below and enjoy the event tonight!
