Following its premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival in September, André 3000 ‘s Jimi Hendrix biopic, Jimi: All Is By My Side is set to make its U.S. debut at SXSW 2014 in March.
Written, directed and executive produced by John Ridley ( 12 Years A Slave ), the film covers a year in the life of the legendary guitarist, when he was an unknown backup musician playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene up until his Monterey Pop triumph.
The film presents an intimate portrait of the sensitive young musician on the verge of becoming a rock legend.
The film doesn’t feature any of Hendrix’s original songs due to his estate’s refusal, however the Outkast emcee will sing covers of the Beatles, Elvis, Muddy Waters , and the Troggs , whose song “Wild Thing” closed out his star-making, guitar-burning Monterey set in 1967.
“In researching him, I saw that a lot of the paths that he went down where the same ones that I went down when I was a young kid,” Andre said in November. “He did what he thought was right for his music. I always gravitated towards him. This movie is the real shit right here. I think people will learn things they didn’t know.”
Shot in Ireland, All Is by My Side also stars British actresses Imogen Poots ( That Awkward Moment ) and Hayley Atwell ( Captain America: The First Avenger ), Irish actress Ruth Negga ( World War Z ), and American actor Burn Gorman ( Pacific Rim ).
