Telemundo’s ‘Celia’ Key Art

¡¡¡Azúúúcaaarrr!!! This fall, Telemundo will honor the late Celia Cruz , “La Reina de la Salsa,” with a 80-hour biopic miniseries, simply titled Celia.

Set in the midst of the Cuban revolution, Celia will follow the story and legacy of a woman who began her career in salsa’s white male-dominated music scene.

She would go on to become the most influential female figure in the history of Cuban music, collaborating with legends such as the late Tito Puente and Fania All-Stars bandleader Johnny Pacheco , whose group she joined after their hit LP, Celia y Johnny (1974). 23 of Celia’s 70+ recorded albums went gold and she won seven Grammy awards.

She passed away from brain cancer at age 77 on July 16, 2003.

Puerto Rican actress Jeimy Osorio ( Fast Five ) will take on the role of young Celia, while Cuban actress/singer Aymée Nuviola will portray her in later years.

Celia’s late husband Pedro Knight will be played by Modesto Lacen ( Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights ) and Willie Denton .

Directed by Victor Mallarino and Liliana Bocanegra from a screenplay by Paul Rodriguez and Andres Salgado , Celia is executive produced by Nelson Martinez . It is a Fox Telecolombia Telemundo production.
