Beasts of No Nation , an African war drama starring Idris Elba ( Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom ), will premiere worldwide on Netflix on October 16, 2015.
There will also be a limited theatrical release in independent theaters by Bleecker Street the same day, as major theater chains — unwilling to compete with Netflix — announced a boycott when the streaming service acquired the film’s rights for $12 million earlier this year.
Directed and written by Cary Fukunaga ( Sin Nombre ), Beasts of No Nation is based on the bestselling 2006 novel of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala .
The story follows Agu (played by Abraham Attah ), a boy who is forced to join a group of soldiers during the civil war of a West African country.
Fukunaga also produced the feature along with Amy Kaufman, Daniela Taplin Lundberg, Riva Marker and Dan Crown under Participant Media and Red Crown.
Shot last year in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Beasts of No Nation was executive produced by Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King for Participant along with documentary filmmaker Bill Benenson and Laura Bickford .
The film’s cast includes Ama K. Abebrese and Opeyemi Fagbohungbe . No trailer has been released just yet.
