A+E Networks has acquired the exclusive TV rights to Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad & Me, a one-hour documentary following Golden Globe winning actor Idris Elba on a journey of self-discovery after starring in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Directed by BAFTA award-winner Daniel Vernon, the film chronicles the story behind the creation of Mi Mandela, the actor-singer’s 2013 South African music album in tribute to Nelson Mandela and to his own late father. It will air on History in Africa in 2015.
“Although difficult at times, ‘Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad & Me’ was an incredibly fulfilling project and I’m thrilled to bring the film to Africa,” Elba said. “HISTORY offers the perfect platform to share this story and I hope viewers enjoy following my journey while producing my album Mi Mandela, a tribute to my father and to Mandela, one of Africa’s – and the world’s – most inspirational icons.”
“We are excited to bring this fantastic new piece of content to Africa,” added Rachel Job, director of programming for HISTORY at A+E Networks. “’Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad & Me’ will resonate with our HISTORY viewers, as it brings to life a remarkable personal story combined with the musical culture and history of South Africa.”
The documentary is produced by Green Door Pictures, Shine North, Woodcut Media, Bob & Co, and it is distributed by Content Media.
Jamie Phillips, sales manager at Content Television, said: “We’re delighted to sign this significant deal for Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad & Me following the debut of the film at MIPTV. Having a globally renowned broadcaster such as A+E Networks on board will be a fantastic starting point in the international success of this inspirational and moving documentary.”
