Puerto Rican supermodel Joan Smalls is one of six beauties featured in Vogue Magazine ‘s “Shape Shifters” editorial for April 2015.

Joan — along with models Vanessa Axente, Adriana Lima, Karmen Pedaru, Cameron Russell , and Caroline Trentini — shares her secrets for staying in shape.

“I’ve always believed that it’s sexy when a woman can pull her own weight,” says Joan who was diagnosed with scoliosis at 14 and relies on posture-enhancing workouts to fortify her back and gluteus muscles. “And I can now—in heels!”

With the help of New York-based trainer Mark Gordon her workout blends cardio and body-sculpting, with a focus on quality over quantity.

“It’s much better to do 15 correct crunches,” she says, “than 50 or 100 sloppy ones.”
