Get On Up stars Chadwick Boseman , Nelsan Ellis and Tika Sumpter dazzle on the cover Ebony Magazine ‘s September 2014 issue .
Not sure why the James Brown biopic actors didn’t cover the magazine’s August issue to coincide with the movie’s release on August 2nd but I digress.
The cast mates appear in a Harlem Renaissance-inspired photo spread shot at the world-famous Apollo Theater, where James Brown performed more than 200 times and produced and financed the first-ever “Live at the Apollo” recording in 1962.
Chadwick gives a phenomenal performance as Get On Up’s leading man, while Nelsan stars as longtime James Brown collaborator Bobby Byrd and Tika as singer Yvonne Fair.
Directed by Tate Taylor , the film also stars Jill Scott ( Why Did I Get Married? ) as Brown’s second wife Deidre “Dee-Dee” Jenkins, Viola Davis ( The Help ) as James Brown’s mother Susie, Octavia Spencer ( Fruitvale Station ) as his aunt Honey, Keith Robinson ( 35 and Ticking ) as guitarist Baby Roy, Lennie James ( Colombiana ) as Brown’s father Joe, Dan Aykroyd ( Ghostbusters ) as his agent Ben Bart, Craig Robinson ( This Is the End ) as saxophonist Maceo Parker, New Edition’s Ralph Tresvant as singer Sam Cooke.
The warts-and-all film will give us a glimpse at the Godfather of Soul’s triumphant and turbulent rise from destitute poverty in Augusta, Georgia to a becoming a music legend.
Shot in Natchez and Jackson, Mississippi, the feature is based on a screenplay by written by Steven Baigelman, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth , and it’s produced by Brian Grazer and Rolling Stones ‘ Mick Jagger . Watch the new clip below.
