I’ve been dying to feature the art and illustration work of
Charles Arrington
, better known as
Illumistrations
, for months now!
In December, the amazing Virginia-based, self-taught artist was giving away a bundle of his comic art, some originals and some, fan art with a mahogany twist.
The beautiful Black versions of characters I grew up reading and watching danced across my Tumblr dashboard, reblogged over and over by others who were just as excited, and I haven’t been able to forget them since.
Powerpuff Girls by Illumistrations
Batgirl, Robin, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Powerpuff Girls, Sailor Moon, Calvin & Hobbes, Supergirl
and
Wonder Woman
all get Illumistration reworks, evoking some serious nostalgia while filling an obvious void — a lack of black and brown faces in comics.
While Charles does a bang-up job in recreating the superheroes, heroines and villains we love, his own characters are remarkable as well.
Hopefully soon, we’ll see his forthcoming graphic novel titled,
Redux Deluxe
and his first publication,
The Illuminate Darkness Experiment: The Art of Evolution
.
