Adam Yauch Park Ceremony, May 3, 2013

A year ago today, beloved Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch passed away after a three-year battle with salivary gland cancer.

The cultural icon was honored on Friday with Adam Yauch Park , formerly Palmetto Playground , a small park that sits below a highway on-ramp in Brooklyn just a few blocks from his childhood home.

Group member Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz , Yauch’s parents, city officials, and a crowd of fans attended the ceremony.

“It’s fitting that we’re here today to dedicate a playground to Adam Yauch, because like the Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys is for the children…”

– Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz

Yauch was not only a hip-hop legend but also a sensitive human rights activist, heavily involved in the Tibetan independence movement.

Watch Ad-Rock’s speech at the ceremony below and stop by Adam Yauch Park at the corner of Columbia Place and State Street. R.I.P, Adam.
