Rapper A$AP Rocky Says Red Lips Are For Fair-Skinned Women Only…
Women have been painting their lips since Ancient Mesopotamia, where they crushed gemstones to express themselves through color.
The only difference now is the overabundance of brands and choices — color, stick, gloss, stain, combo — and the occasional rapper offering his cute little input.
Such is the case with Harlem
emcee
fashion queen
A$AP Rocky
, who sat down with
The Coveteur
, where he talked about style and went off on a rant about women’s makeup.
His preference of “au naturale” women is not unheard of as most men seem to prefer a woman that doesn’t shave or use deodorant, but his comments about darker-skinned women wearing red lipstick are extremely precious:
“But for real, for me, I feel like with the red lipstick thing it all depends on the complexion. I’m just being for real. You have to be fair skinned to get away with that. Just like if you were to wear like—f—- for instance, what do dark skin girls have that you know fair skinned girls can’t do… Purple lipstick? Naw, that looks stupid on all girls! Purple lipstick, guys! Like, what the f—-…”
Now unlike the “I Love Bad Bitches, I Got A Fuckin’ Problem” rapper, I’ve seen plenty of non-fair-skinned women of all shades pull off wearing various hues of red.
What’s funny is that when A$AP rolled onto
106 and Park
in a leather
dress
shirt, women
defended his style choice
against homophobic assholes and gender experts.
In any case, I’m pretty sure this means we get to call him out for those cheesy Compton circa 1994 gold teeth and braids.
As for his comments, at first I figured he just needs an ice cold cup of SHUT THE FUCK UP.
But then I realized, maybe he’s never seen how gorgeous a bold crimson lip sits against caramel, mocha, and cappuccino skin (sorry, I’m having a craving).
Perhaps he’s somehow missed the look on Kelly Rowland, Meagan Good, Gabrielle Union, Chanel Iman, Tika Sumpter, Tatyana Ali, Janelle Monae, Azaelea Banks, Arlenis Sosa, Jessica White, Ajak Deng, Jourdan Dunn, Jasmine Tookes, Kenya Moore, Sessilee Lopez, Yaya DaCosta, Maria Borges, Senait Gidey, Melodie Monrose, Sharam Diniz, Keke Palmer, Nia Long, Brandy , Joan Smalls and Jennifer Hudson — to name a few .
