Sundance Channel has gone into overdrive teasing the third season of its compelling, slow-burning drama, Rectify , which will debut on July 9.

The story centers on Daniel Holden ( Aden Young ), a man who returns to his hometown — the rural Christian town of Paulie, Georgia — after 19 years on death row.

While the trailer (below) doesn’t give us much, we see that the new season will pick up on the afternoon of Daniel’s plea deal.

In three longer clips below, Daniel is still adjusting to freedom, his step-brother Teddy ( Clayne Crawford ) realizes his attempt to stop Daniel’s deal has failed, and the two will have an awkward conversation about why Teddy’s wife Tawny ( Adelaide Clemens ) left him.

Created by Ray McKinnon , Rectify also stars Abigail Spencer ( Oz the Great and Powerful ), J. Smith-Cameron ( Man on a Ledge ), Luke Kirby ( Take This Waltz ), Jake Austin Walker ( Burning Palms ), Bruce McKinnon ( Lawles s), Michael O’Neill ( Extant ), and Sharon Conley ( If Loving You Is Wrong ).

“Rectify is set in the South and depicts a culture we Southerners are familiar with in a real way—no cliche—yet the story and characters are universal and relatable,” says executive in charge of production, Marshall Persinger . “Watching episodes is like reading chapters in a novel as these richly drawn characters are revealed. Think ‘To Kill a Mockingbird.'”

If you haven’t seen the show, you can catch up on seasons one and two now on Sundance.tv , iTunes or Netflix. There will also be a marathon on Sundance Channel on July 4.

Season 3 premieres on Thursday, July 9 at 10pm.
