A two-part miniseries is set to air late 2015, when Idris will return as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, the obsessive murder detective whose brilliant mind can’t always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions.
The new series is written by creator Neil Cross, with co-production by BBC Drama Production and BBC America.
“Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there’s hardly been a minute when I didn’t wonder what happened next,” Neil said in a statement. “So I decided to find out. We’re putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work.”
The two hour-long episodes will film in and around London in March 2015.
Luther first aired on BBC One in May 2010. For each of the show’s three seasons Idris has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film, winning the award in 2012.
The U.S. adaptation, which will be executive produced by Idris alongside Neil, has received a pilot commitment from Fox.
