The 43-year-old plays the role of “Hattie Pearl,” a field worker, though there are no details as to how Hattie is related the film’s main character “Cecil Gaines” (based on Eugene Allen), played by Forest Whitaker.
Allen served eight presidents as a White House butler until retirement as chief butler and Maître d’ in 1986.
Strangely, with the release of the photo there is more discussion about Mariah being without makeup (because I guess we’re all obsessed with seeing celebrities look like “normal people”) as if she wasn’t also sans makeup and wearing a faux mustache in Daniels’ 2009 film Precious).
The discussion of whether light skinned or mixed-raced slaves ever worked in fields has also been sparked, despite the fact that the practice of only using lighter slaves for house work was not the rule on every plantation.
And whether Hattie is or is not a slave has not been confirmed.
The Butler, which hits theaters August 16, 2013, boasts an all-star cast that includes Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, Colman Domingo, John Cusack, Alan Rickman, Jane Fonda, Melissa Leo, Liev Schreiber, Jesse Williams, Aml Ameen, Lenny Kravitz, Cuba Gooding Jr, and many more.
