Listen & Download: M.I.A. Evokes the Sound of India in “MATANGI Mix for Kenzo”
Tamil-British bad girl M.I.A. has just released a hot new banger titled, “MATANGI Mix for Kenzo,” featuring new and old school sounds of India blended over hyper electro and dub step beats.
The lo-fi eight-minute mix gives us a preview of M.I.A’s long-awaited fourth studio album, Matangi, her first since signing to Jay-Z‘s Roc Nation last spring.
The name is derived from one of ten Tantric goddesses and a ferocious aspect of Devi, the Hindu Divine Mother in the Shakta tradition of Hinduism.
Matangi, which the outspoken artist has described as a mixture of her three previous albums, (Arular – 2005, Kala – 2007, and Maya – 2010), is due out sometime this year!
The mix is all instrumentals and samples until around the 5:15 mark, where we finally hear M.I.A. sing, “hey, it’s a sign of the times… can we go find something money can’t buy?” And just before the beat drops she rhymes:
“I’m thankful for my hands, ’cause it’s a good thrower,
I’m thanks for my body, ’cause it’s a fuckin’ banger,
I’m thankful for my mouth, ’cause it’s a real screwer
But most of all, I’m thankful for… my power!“
