Da-What.com Asks, “What is Hip-hop?” – Donny Goines

Da-What.com recently launched an editorial series titled, Da’ What Is Hip Hop? , where they interview artists from all over the world to find out what the music genre/lifestyle means to them.

The series kicked off with Espen Anderson , a producer and member of Norwegian hip-hop collective, Deadbeatz , who shared some interesting facts — such as hip-hop being the most popular musical style among young Norwegians today.

For their latest edition, New York rap artist Donny Goines , known for breaking the world record for longest freestyle last year, gives his perspective. Here’s a snippet:

“I remember growing up in NYC during the Mid 90′s, watching this term evolve from a hidden culture in plain sight, to a creation too large to view completely.

I recall cyphers on the corners, break dancing in the house parties, recording the Dj sets of Kay Slay, Kid Capri, Ron G and so many others so we could hear them again and again.

The visions of boomboxes being carried on the shoulders of the youthful, speakers plugged into long extensions cords from the first floor window, graffiti colorfully decorating our neighborhood.

Many nights we poured out St. Ides to the ground or threw up a pair of sneakers up on the light pole in the memory of those who perished far too young.”
