If you’re not a Beyoncé fan, or better yet, find yourself in the group of people who “cannot stand her,” 2013 is not your year.
The singer, actress, businesswoman, fashion designer, mogul-wife and mother has already begun to once again dominate your televisions, news feeds and conversations.
Realizing this, Vogue enlisted the diva for their March 2013 Power Issue, where she graces the cover and gets unusually intimate, speaking on Blue Ivy, her one-year-old daughter with husband Jay-Z, rumors of her faking her pregnancy and hiring a surrogate, her upcoming HBO documentary and so much more.
Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier in a Mary Howard set design, Bey is adorned in a lavish red 3D floral Alexander Wang gown, an equally luxurious Oscar de la Renta gown, and pieces from Marni, Haider Ackermann, and Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci chosen by Fashion Editor, Camilla Nickerson.
Her carefree up-do is styled by Kim Kimble, with nude makeup and a killer cat-eye by Francesca Tolot. See the full spread, read a few excerpts from her interview, and watch behind the scenes from the shoot below.
On Blue Ivy:
“She’s my road dog. She’s my homey, my best friend.”
“I felt very maternal around eight months. And I thought I couldn’t become any more until I saw the baby. . . . But it happened during my labor because I had a very strong connection with my child. I felt like when I was having contractions, I envisioned my child pushing through a very heavy door. And I imagined this tiny infant doing all the work, so I couldn’t think about my own pain. . . . We were talking. I know it sounds crazy, but I felt a communication.”
On fake pregnancy rumors:
“That was very odd. Who even thinks that? Like, who would make that up. . . . You can’t take it too seriously.”
On upcoming HBO documentary, Life is But a Dream:
“My story has never been told—no one really knows who I am… This movie has healed me in so many ways. It makes me want to cry…. I’m sorry (eyes welling)… I’m very passionate about it, and it just feels good.”
On appreciating her father’s style of business:
“My father taught me so much about being a businesswoman. And I’m understanding him a lot now… A lot of the crazy things he did were necessary.”
On husband, Jay-Z:
“Just knowing someone’s always going to be honest and tell the truth, [who] can understand exactly what I’m going through—and I can understand exactly what he’s going through.”
